About the Society
The JNU IR Society was formally founded in January 2022 with an aim to contribute to a vibrant and thick academic culture of discussion and deliberation at the student level at School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. We believe in the power of collaborative learning and free exchange of ideas, both of which enforce a stimulating research environment.
In recognition of the growing public interest in IR in India, the Society has reimagined itself as the Society for Indian IR in October 2024, a pan-India collective seeking to engage diverse stakeholders in the Indian IR community, albeit driven by the young scholarly leadership.
In its earlier avatar, the JNU IR Society saw the formidable legacy of SIS as a source of inspiration. We looked up to the institution and faculty for guidance, positive engagement, and inspiration, but as a purely student-led effort, the Society had not been formally attached to the administration in any way.
We recognise the important role that academia has to play in shaping public discussion. As responsible members of the Indian IR epistemic community, we also wish to add depth and clarity to public discussions of IR & Area Studies in India. Society for Indian IR welcomes engagement from IR enthusiasts around the country and the world. We invite enthusiastic participation, diverse views, and new ideas in pursuit of academic excellence and national interest. To get in touch, please write to us at societyforindianir[@]gmail. com.

The Society’s flagship event- Sunday IR Cafe – is a bi-weekly offering involving peer discussion on a selected piece of IR-related content, journal articles but also fiction and movies. The session seeks to accommodate diverse viewpoints and encourages multidisciplinary approaches.
